Chichen Itza - Yucatán, México

Fascinating Mayan city whose name means "the city of the wizards of the water". It is located to the south of Mùrida in the state of Yucatan; in the middle of splendid natural surroundings that allow to us appreciate it in all its magnitude. Contemplate the contrast between the intense blue of the sky and the emerald green of the vegetation. Underground rivers abound, as well as natural wells and limestone stones that the Mayans used to erect their magnificent buildings. Chichen Itza is an entire city that today still reveals to us the glory of its founders.

Chichen Itza knew its' most glorious times between the years 700 and 1200, although it was occupied for more than 2000 years. It controlled commerce and it unified the region; it was the center of politics, economics and military.

The main attraction it is the Castle or Pyramid of Kukulcan, a huge pyramid that ends in a temple. To the north of the archaeological zone you will find the Sacred Natural Well, a quiet witness to multiple ceremonies that the Mayans made there. The Observatory or Caracol is another one of the buildings that enjoy its deserved international fame, since it was constructed to observe Venus, planet that the Mayans identified with the God Kukulcan, the "plumed serpent".

Cross the Sac Bes, the white footpaths, by which the old Mayan journeyed and allow yourself to be surrounded by the magic of the past. Feel the anticipation when the God Kukulcan arrives each Equinox, as lights and shades ascend and descend the temple every year in the spring and autumn; thus reaffirming its stately permanence in the memory of man through the centuries.

EDZNA: Mayan word of origin Yucateco could allude to the itzáes. Itza is a Mayan name that became to several tribes (native chontales) to include the southwest of Logwood. They developed a prosperous commercial emporium from the years 900 to the 1200 through rivers, lagoons and the western coast of the peninsula. In such case Edzná would mean "House of the Itzáes". Another possibility is that Edzná means "House of the echo". In fact, acoustic phenomenons occur between the main buildings of the site. A third meaning would be "House of the gestures" because of the large stucco mask that is said existed in the watershed of the highest building of the zone.

The erratic distribution of rains and the floods of diverse sectors of the valley, prompted them to construct an ample hydraulic system formed by an extensive network of channels, cisterns, water sheds, and numerous chultunes or underground dumps that allowed, the simultaneous storage and distribution of the rainwater and to reject the overflow.
