Tihosuco and its History
The history of Tihosuco village dates back to 1534 when the first Catholic priests arrived in the Yucatan peninsula. They were searching for wealthy towns to establish their headquarters, the axis around which they would spread their gospel. Tihosuco became the first one. The opposition to the Spanish crown started here originating a massive pagan exodus to the island in 1605. In 1686 pirates Lorencillo and Garammont, on their way to Valladolid, devastated it after disembarking in Asunción Bay. However, it was during the Castes War when Tihosuco almost disappeared, being home of relentless rebel leader Jacinto Pat.
